Five cases of cystic meningioma are reported. These rare tumors usuall
y comprise a cystic component within or adjacent to a solid component.
Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are sometimes misl
eading, suggestive of a metastasis or a glioblastoma. Selective caroti
d arteriography with opacification of the external carotid artery esta
blishes the diagnosis. In patients with no primary cancer, solitary cy
stic tumors must be removed surgically to allow a histologic study. Th
e prognosis after surgery is good.
