In the present work, excised embryonic axes of almond desiccated to be
tween 10 to 4% moisture could survive liquid nitrogen exposure with pe
rcentage viability ranging from 100 to 40. The highest survival after
cryopreservation was obtained for axes desiccated to about 7% moisture
when normal healthy shoots and roots emerged from 66% of surviving ax
es. Desiccation below 7% moisture caused a decline in percentage viabi
lity and rate of regrowth.
