Tr. George et Dl. Feltz, MOTIVATION IN SPORT FROM A COLLECTIVE EFFICACY PERSPECTIVE, International journal of sport psychology, 26(1), 1995, pp. 98-116
Motivation in sport is one of the most prevalent topics of study in th
e field of sport psychology. Research has generally focused on individ
ual motivation despite the fact that most sport activities occur in gr
oup settings. The extant research views group motivation from several
perspectives, including team cohesion, attribution, social loafing and
goal-setting. A more recent perspective on group motivation stems fro
m an extension of Bandura's self-efficacy theory. In this article, col
lective efficacy is examined as a viable theory for understanding grou
p motivation. The paper addresses the existing literature on group mot
ivation in sport; the theory of self-efficacy and how it extends to co
llective efficacy, including relevant literature relating to collectiv
e efficacy; and suggestions for future collective efficacy research.
