Lactarius blennius var viridis and L subdulcis form smooth ectomycorrh
izas with beech roots. These mycorrhizas present large differences in
organization. Fungal mantles show different structures. The Hartig net
is normally developed in L subdulcis and is discontinuous in the othe
r species. Both mycorrhizas contain many laticifers and intracellular
hyphae in the roof cell of beech. L subdulcis mycorrhizas are frequent
ly infected by an ascomycete whose hyphae are present equally in the m
antle and the root cortex.
