Field work on palaeoseismicity was carried out within the Aquitain bas
in (France). This structural study of cross-section led to the discove
ry of tectonic surface ruptures in a middle Pleistocene alluvial terra
ce of the River Adour. The origin of this deformation is probably seis
mic. The presence of these surface ruptures shows the likely evidence
of a great palaeoearthquake, in an area where the historical and instr
umental seismicity is very weak or absent. These observations are fitt
ed into the regional tectonic framework.
