Ca. Bookman et al., ADVANCEMENT AND USE OF BEACH NOURISHMENT TECHNOLOGY IN THE UNITED-STATES, Marine Technology Society journal, 28(3), 1994, pp. 59-65
The protection of sandy shorelines by means of periodic placement of b
each quality sand is an increasingly popular method of shoreline prote
ction in the United States. Yet, the practice remains controversial fo
r economic and environmental reasons. This paper reviews the state of
practice of beach nourishment technology in the United States and asse
sses technology and policy issues that need to be addressed to improve
the application of the technology and the performance of beach nouris
hment projects. The paper is based on ongoing work of the Marine Board
of the National Research Council that is slated to be completed in CY
1995.
