Abstract
The free iron observed in as-cast Nd2Fe14B type alloys is due to the p resence of a peritectic reaction during solidification and adversely a ffects the magnetic properties of the bonded magnets made from these a lloys. It was found that the iron could be completely removed by eithe r homogenization treatments or hydrogen processing. The findings of th is investigation may be used to develop a new group of permanent magne ts or to treat other alloys.
