A series of stellular pentaporphyrins, in which tetraphenylporphyrin u
nits are linked through alpha,omega-dioxyalkyl (C-3, C-4) spacer group
s, have been prepared and characterised using the procedures developed
by Little and by Milgrom. Free bases and central metalloporphyrin com
plexes (zinc, nickel) have been prepared. It is proposed that such mol
ecules with sufficiently flexible spacer groups should be capable of p
roviding cavities suitable for coordinated catalytic systems. Prelimin
ary Langmuir-Blodgett experiments on film formation and transfer are d
escribed.
