Complexes of 3,4-toluenediamine, [M(tdi)(2)] where M=Ni, Pd or Pt, and
3,4-benzophenonediamine, [Ni(bpdi)(2)], have been synthesized and the
value of chi((3)) has been determined in DMSO at 1064 nm by the retro
reflection DFWM technique. A value for chi((3)) Of 10.3 X 10(-13) esu
was observed for [Ni(bpdi)(2)] with a ratio of chi(xxxx)(3)/chi(xyyx)(
(3)) of 3, suggesting a non-linear process that is predominantly elect
ronic.
