The crystal and molecular structure of the title compound has been det
ermined by X-ray crystallography, H-1 NMR and C-13 NMR spectroscopy. I
n the crystals of the chiral carbohydrate the hydroxyl groups are held
together by intramolecular H bonding, and there is an intermolecular
link between one hydroxyl hydrogen atom and an oxygen of the isopropyl
idene ring. The tin atom is in a tetrahedral environment and the short
est Sn...O separation is 3.354(5) Angstrom, an interaction that appear
s to have no effect on the stereochemistry of the metal. The H-1 NMR s
pectrum shows long-range splitting of a methylene proton by a hydroxyl
hydrogen.
