Subluxation of the atlantoaxial joint is most commonly seen in small-b
reed dogs and may occur subsequent to a variety of lesions of the dens
or atlantoaxial ligaments. In each case, dorsal displacement of the a
xis results in compression of the cervical spinal cord. Surgical corre
ction is recommended for most patients, and recovery is possible even
in severe cases if compression of the spinal cord can be relieved and
the joint can be reduced and stabilized. Dorsal and ventral stabilizat
ion procedures have been described, but complications are common. Vent
ral stabilization with lag screws may result in the most favorable sur
gical outcome with fewest complications of the commonly reported surgi
cal techniques.
