E. Knobloch et Z. Kvacek, A VERTICILLATE PUZZLE - NEMEJCIA-EOCENICA KNOBLOCH AND KVACEK, FORM-GEN ET SP-NOV (ANGIOSPERMS) FROM THE UPPER EOCENE OF CENTRAL-EUROPE, Review of palaeobotany and palynology, 84(3-4), 1995, pp. 413-418
The structure of enigmatic plant remains designated here as Nemejcia e
ocenica Knobloch and Kvacek, form-gen. et sp. nov. from the Upper Eoce
ne of western Bohemia (Czech Republic) are presented to permit wider d
iscussion of their possible affinities. These axes with verticillate b
racts (?leaves) recall sphenophtes, but in exceptional cases a simple
row of disc-shaped, vertically orientated bodies (fruits?) occur withi
n the bracts. Hence, a kind of angiosperm infractescence that is mostl
y devoid of fruits, or stems that are occasionally fertile, can be inf
erred.
