Abstract
The effect of orbital relaxation in average-atom calculations of the a tomic physics of plasmas is investigated using self-consistent-held mo dels for several elements. It is shown that for medium and high-Z mate rials the effect of orbital relaxation, whilst being very significant for low states of ionization, is less significant for higher states an d that the effect of orbital relaxation varies substantially along an isoelectronic sequence.
