A new method for chemically modifying highly oriented pyrolytic graphi
te based on the catalytic oxidation of the surface with platinum as th
e catalyst is proposed. The method makes it possible only to modify th
e outer layer of the crystalline lattice without destroying it. As a r
esult, a great number of ''point'' defects appear on the outer surface
of the crystal, which are uniformly distributed on the surface with h
igh density.
