Three new species of Curculionidae are described from Possession Islan
d and a key to the weevil fauna of the island is provided. The followi
ng nomenclatural changes are made, based on an examination of all 36 s
pecies in the Ectemnorhinus-group of genera: Neocanonopsis Hoffmann is
synonymized with Christensenia Brinck, Antarctonesiotes Jeannel and M
esembriorrhinus Jeannel with Bothrometopus Jeannel, and Dusmoecetes Je
annel and Xanium Enderlein with Ectemnorhinus G.R. Waterhouse. Christe
nsenia dreuxi (Hoffmann) comb, n. is transferred from Neocanopsis, Bot
hrometopus crozetensis (Enderlein) comb. n. is transferred from Mesemb
riorrhinus and reinstated as a valid species, Bothrometopus desolation
is (Jeannel) comb. n. is transferred from Antarctonesiotes, Ectemnorhi
nus vanhoeffenianus (Enderlein) comb. n. is transferred from Xanium, a
nd Ectemnorhinus possessionensis (Hoffmann) comb. n. is transferred fr
om Xanium and removed from synonymy with Ectemnorhinus vanhoeffenianus
. The rich diversity of species on Possession Island is briefly compar
ed with that of the other South Indian Ocean Province islands.
