The collision-induced dissociations of (CH2S)-C--(O)(2)CH3, (CD2S)-C--
(O)(2)CH3 and (CH2S)-C--(O)OCH3 indicate that (i) a sulphone/sulphinat
e ester rearrangement does not occur for these systems, (ii) proton tr
ansfer accompanying or preceding the fragmentation of the [M-H](-) ion
of the sulphone is a minor process, and (iii) the characteristic frag
mentations of (CH2S)-C--(O)(2)CH3 and (CH2S)-C--(O)OCH3 form [CH2S(O)(
2)](-.) and HCSO- respectively.
