The synthesis and optical properties of Pr-doped Ge-Ga-S glasses are r
eported. The radiative properties associated with the important (1)G(4
) --> H-3(5) transition of pr(3+) at 1.3 mu m have been determined by
absorption and fluorescence measurements coupled with Judd-Ofelt analy
sis. As compared with ZBLAN glass, Pr-doped Ge-Ga-S glasses have a lon
ger fluorescence lifetime and a larger stimulated emission cross-secti
on, which are favorable for an efficient fiber amplifier. The concentr
ation quenching of Pr3+ in these glasses has also been studied by fluo
rescence lifetime measurements.
