The literature pertaining to small bowel imaging in the past year stre
sses the use of cross-sectional imaging techniques in the evaluation o
f small bower obstruction, gastrointestinal neoplasm, inflammatory bow
er disease, and trauma to the intestine and mesentery. In particular,
the greater sensitivity of computed tomography relative to conventiona
l radiography in differentiating between small bowel obstruction and a
dynamic ileus is emphasized. Barium contrast study assessment of early
mucosal changes in Crohn's disease, postoperative findings in patient
s receiving small bowel transplants, and the diagnosis and management
of intussusception are also reviewed.
