An analysis is carried out of the crack tip stress intensity factor ex
isting around the front of a semi-elliptical surface flaw, when it is
propelled by a Hertzian indentation test. The influence of crack size,
position, ellipticity and orientation on stress intensity factors and
strain energy release rate is investigated. It is shown that generall
y a surface flaw will ''run around'' to form a shallow ring crack befo
re propagating inwards into the material.
