For this study of the division of caregiving labor, adult daughters an
d sons of 31 cognitively disabled mothers were interviewed regardless
of their participation in providing care. Three types of caregiving sy
stems were identified: the primary caregiver, the partnership, and the
team. Family size and gender composition appear to be important deter
minants of a system, and each is characterized by a predominant value
(affiliation, equity, and emotional protection of offspring).
