NANOSTRUCTURES - NEW FORMS OF LUMINESCENT SILICON

The cover picture represents a 60-atom silicon nanocluster with a diam ond-like structure, within the supercage of zeolite Y. In this article , recent developments in the chemical synthesis of novel and well-defi ned nanoscale forms of luminescent silicon are reviewed and the method s used to ''trick'' silicon (an indirect bandgap semiconductor with el ectric dipole forbidden luminescence) into emitting light discussed.
