The results from a survey conducted by a committee set up by the Counc
il of the RAS are presented. They show that the position of women in a
stronomy and geophysics in this country is roughly in line with that f
ound in other professional disciplines and in other countries. In gene
ral women are being under-rewarded with permanent posts and promotion
in comparison with their male colleagues. However, the survey showed t
hat women were committed to their profession and prepared to work hard
at it.
