The SiC matrix composites reinforced with carbon-coated HI-NICALON wer
e investigated, Samples hot-pressed at 1750 degrees C had a maximum st
rength and K-IC of 490 MPa and 11 MPa root m at room temperature, resp
ectively. The strength at 1300 degrees C was higher than that at room
temperature, However, the strength decreased above 1400 degrees C. The
re might be an amorphous phase in the matrix which softens the samples
at high temperatures, resulting in plastic behaviour at high temperat
ures.
