Ml. Hatch et al., BEHAVIORAL TREATMENT OF OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER IN AFRICAN-AMERICANS, Cognitive and behavioral practice, 3(2), 1996, pp. 303-315
This paper reviews some important features in the presentation, diagno
sis, and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in African A
mericans. Some adaptations to the behavioral treatment of OCD in Afric
an Americans are illustrated through the use of case examples. The gro
wing awareness in psychology that cultural and ethnic issues are impor
tant factors in effective treatment planning forms the basis for the p
resent paper. African Americans with OCD in particular have tended not
to seek help in mental health settings, and there is little published
research in this area. Thus, many clinicians and researchers may be u
nfamiliar with issues relevant to treatment issues of OCD in this popu
lation.
