Abstract
The efficacy of monotherapy with lisinopril 20 mg once daily was compa red with that of a combination of lisinopril 20 mg and hydrochlorothia zide 12.5 mg once daily in 149 patients with mild to moderate hyperten sion in a multi-centre randomised double-blind study. Eight weeks' tre atment with the combination produced a greater fall in sitting systoli c and diastolic pressure than did monotherapy with the angiotensin con verting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. The proportion of patients who achieve d the target blood pressure was similar in both treatment groups but a higher proportion of patients on combination treatment showed a fall in diastolic pressure >15%. Both treatments were well tolerated with f ew adverse events reported. There were no significant differences betw een the two treatments with respect to tolerability. The combination o f lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide did not appear to have an adverse effect on sodium, potassium, glucose, or total cholesterol levels. Th e combination of lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide is effective and w ell tolerated in the management of mild to moderate hypertension. (C) 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
