New radiative-lifetime measurements based on time-resolved laser-induc
ed fluorescence are reported for 133 odd-parity and 2 even-parity leve
ls of Co I, ranging in energy from 28300 to 59400 cm(-1). Our lifetime
s agree with earlier, but much less extensive, lifetime measurements b
ased on laser-induced fluorescence. Satisfactory agreement is also fou
nd with the critical compilation of atomic transition probabilities fr
om the U.S. National Bureau of Standards [J. Phys. Chem. Ref Data 17,
Suppl 4 (1988)]. Our measurements provide a reliable absolute normaliz
ation for a much more comprehensive determination of Co I atomic trans
ition probabilities.
