The paper discusses a modification of Capon's maximum likelihood metho
d. The proposed algorithm processes signals by using partial radiation
patterns previously shaped in the same way as in classical beamformin
g. In this way, the dimensionality of the problem is reduced significa
ntly. It is shown that this algorithm, which assures a high resolving
power and accuracy in determining the angular coordinates of sources,
is able to process signals from a graded profile receiver. Computer si
mulation results are presented for receivers with undistorted and dist
orted radiation patterns.
