The anodic oxidation of organics is a potentially powerful technique o
f controlling pollutants in industrial waste waters. Based on a fundam
ental analysis? this paper summarizes recent results in this field. Di
rect electrochemical processes catalyzed by the oxygen-transfer reacti
on are discussed for several anode materials. Ti/SnO2 is particularly
efficient for cold combustion of aromatic pollutants. Potential candid
ate processes involving the electrochemical generation of oxidizer rea
ctants (O-3, H2O2), Or the electrochemical regeneration of metallic re
dox couples are discussed.
