Abstract
We report experimental evidence obtained in physical modeling of the d iffraction of sound waves at a slit in an opaque screen inserted in a two-layered acoustical waveguide. This model demonstrates the efficien cy of the concept of normal mode Fresnel zones (analogs of the ordinar y ray Fresnel zones) in the analysis of mode structure distortions due to diffraction at large-scale inhomogeneities.
