Abstract
The behaviour of a cylinder/wire type superconductor subjected to an i nstantaneous thermal disturbance, characterized by a linear heat sourc e of finite length, is investigated. The mechanism of quenching and re covery of superconductivity is investigated by solving the transient t wo-dimensional heat conduction equation with or without volumetric hea ting, and fixed or moving boundary. A criterion with regard to differe nt modes of behaviour is developed.
