Abstract
Mathematical expressions for Fizeau fringes crossing fibres with an un usual, irregular skin-core cross-section are derived. Firstly, for a f ibre of a circular cross-section with a shifted elliptical core apart from its center and secondly, for a fibre of elliptical cross-section with a shifted circular core apart from its center. These expressions lead to the determination of refractive indices and birefringence for fibres having these special structures. (C) 1996. Published by Elsevie r Science Ltd
