A pBI121-based expression cassette was constructed for a modified phos
phinothricin acetyltransferase gene (PAT or bar) from Streptomyces hyg
roscopicum. After agrobacterial transformation of Nicotiana tabacum SR
1 leaf disks and Solanum tuberosum cv. Prigozhii-2 stem segments, 12 t
ransgenic tobacco and 3 transgenic potato plants were selected and ass
essed for bar expression, resistance to herbicide phosphinothricin, an
d F1 inheritance of the acquired trait. Al transgenic plants proved co
mpletely resistant against phosphinothricin.
