A chlorolignin removal process has been assessed on laboratory scale u
sing bleach plant effluents and waste sludges and solids from three bl
eached softwood kraft mills. AOX removals between 7 and 57% were attai
ned over a wide range of test conditions. Removals of colour and COD w
ere 0-51% and 0-27%, respectively. Treatment efficiency was strongly m
ill dependent. The removal efficiency was enhanced by addition of chem
icals (lime, alum and ferric chloride) during the lignin removal proce
ss (LRP) treatment.
