Abstract
The basic principles of brain activation studies by MRI and functional spectroscopy are presented. The paper introduces the underlying mecha nisms, followed by a discussion of the possibilities and limitations o f current and new measuring techniques. Functional MRI has already pro ven to be a useful tool in neurocognitive research. Initial clinical a pplications have especially been demonstrated in neurosurgical operati on planning.
