A simplified numerical procedure for the analysis of negative skin fri
ction on piles in a layered soil deposit is proposed. Pile-soil interf
ace behavior is modeled by nonlinear soil springs. A framework for det
ermining the model parameters from conventional soil tests data has be
en established. This procedure is used in the back-analysis of seven w
ell-documented test piles in different soil deposits. The good agreeme
nt between the computed and the measured values for all seven piles co
nfirmed the validity of the proposed approach.
