In this paper an essential property of sliding surface coordinate func
tions is exploited for proposing an experimental verification of the o
rders of an assumed system model. The results are applied to verify th
e relative degrees of actual system models, obtained by experimental i
dentification, of a single-link robotic manipulator equipped with arti
ficial pneumatic muscles, and of an armature controlled DC motor drivi
ng an inverted pendulum.
