The present work deals with on-line tool-wear sensing and the developm
ent of a feedback-control system to provide compensation for the tool
wear to keep the dimensions of the workpiece within the tolerance limi
t, an optical displacement sensor being used for on-line monitoring of
the tool wear. The positioning of the tool is performed by rotating t
he cross-feed screw by a stepper motor, a microprocessor kit being use
d as a controller. The width of the nose wear-land is measured with th
e help of a shadowgraph and compared with that obtained from the senso
r output. The principle, verified experimentally, indicates high accur
acy of tool-wear measurement and compensation for different cutting co
nditions. The proposed control device is quite simple and can be used
in an industrial environment.
