A high catalytic activity in esterification of cellulose was shown for
some Lewis acids of the general formula MtX(n) (where Mt is a metal i
on and X is halogen) and their mixtures with proton acids. Synergism w
as observed when MtX(n) and proton acids were used as cocatalysts. The
different catalytic activities of the acids were interpreted based on
the electrical conductivity of the acylating mixtures. The mechanism
of the catalytical acetylation of cellulose was proposed.
