The recommendations contained in this document refer to nomenclature r
elating to theoretical, technological and experimental aspects of mass
spectroscopy, and to the symbolism used when presenting and discussin
g mass spectral data. In 1974, the Commission on Analytical Nomenclatu
re of IUPAC issued recommendations for nomenclature of mass spectrosco
py which are in the form of definitions of some of the terms used in t
his subject. In 1978 the Commission on Molecular Structure and Spectro
scopy updated and extended these recommendations and, in addition, mad
e further recommendations concerning the use of symbols, acronyms, abb
reviations and newly invented jargon. Because the subject continues to
expand rapidly, a further compilation of defined terms has become nec
essary, and the opportunity has been taken to incorporate previous rel
evant recommendations concerning nomenclature and symbolism in order t
o produce a single comprehensive document. A further set of terms rela
ting to vacuum technology, provided through the generosity of the Amer
ican Vacuum Society, has been appended. It is therefore intended that
this set of recommendations should replace the earlier publications on
the subject.
