S. Castro et al., HIGH-RESOLUTION ABUNDANCE ANALYSIS OF 2 STARS NEAR THE GLOBULAR-CLUSTER NGC-6522 PROJECTED IN BAADES WINDOW, Astronomy & Astrophysics. Supplement series, 111(1), 1995, pp. 17-25
The CASPEC echelle spectrograph at the ESO 3.6 m telescope was used to
obtain high resolution spectra of Arp 1145 and Arp 2240, two stars of
the Baade Window, near the globular cluster NGC 6522. The stars were
selected from the list of Pickles and van der Kruit (1990), as one bei
ng metal-poor and the other one metal-rich. From a detailed analysis u
sing equivalent widths and spectrum synthesis we derive the stellar pa
rameters (T-eff log g and [M/H]) = (4750, 1.2, -0.9) and (5000, 2.15,
+0.2), respectively for Arp 1145 and Arp 2240. For the metal-poor star
Arp 1145, excesses of oxygen, calcium and titanium relative to iron a
re found; it may be a member of NGC 6522 or a halo star now traversing
the bulge. Arp 2240, showing nearly solar metallicity and solar abund
ance ratios seems to belong to the inner disk population. The metallic
ity for the metal-rich star Arp 2240 indicates that previous work base
d on mid-resolution spectra tended to overestimate metallicities of me
tal-rich stars by approximate to 0.2-0.3 dex, in agreement with the re
cent results by McWilliam and Rich (1994).
