The problem of increasing the utilization efficiency of digital linear
channels, including optical channels, is extremely important. One of
the ways of solving this problem is to use statistical transmission sy
stems. Various aspects of the design of such systems have been discuss
ed in the technical literature, including ''Elektrosvyaz'''. In partic
ular, in addition to the references given at the end of this paper, an
extremely interesting article by Demovoi et al. was published in Elek
trosvyaz', No. 7, 1991. In the present paper we present some results o
f an investigation of one of the modifications of statistical systems,
in which, in addition to the principle of variable code-word length,
the statistics of the channel activity is also employed. The optimum l
ength of a block of the channel signal is determined by modelling, and
recommendations are made regarding the choice of the structure of the
transmission cycle. Graphs are given which confirm the possibility of
trebling the carrying capacity of the primary digital linear channel.
