Abstract
Two interrelated functions of soil organic mater are distinguished: in biological productivity and in pollution control. Soil organic matter participates in mobilization of elements from poorly accessible forms into biogeochemical cycles and in the formation of spatial heterogene ity of soils facilitating loci for plant root nutrition; these process es, and hence the composition of organic residues and their spatial-te mporal supply into soil, are ecologically important.
