The high-resolution infrared spectra of vinyl fluoride have been recor
ded using a Fourier transform spectrometer with a resolution of 0.0016
cm(-1). The rovibrational structure of the v(12) fundamental (torsion
mode) at 712.3 cm(-1), which gives rise to a c-type band, was analyze
d in detail employing modern methods of computations and graphical aid
s. A comprehensive set of molecular constants for the first excited vi
brational energy level of this band was obtained from the overall rovi
brational assignment of almost 2500 transitions covering J and K-a val
ues up to 40 and 16, respectively, in the region 640-770 cm(-1). The r
otational and centrifugal distortion parameters obtained compare reaso
nably well with those of the ground state, thus confirming that the v(
12) fundamental is essentially unperturbed. (C) 1995 Academic Press, I
