The problems of making high-accuracy and highly detailed radar measure
ment of velocity distributions on a surface are considered. Methods ar
e proposed for forming velocity portraits by means of a radar system m
ounted on a moving aircraft. The conflict between the need to use Dopp
ler effects to ensure high spatial resolution by synthetic aperture me
thods and the need to use these same effects to measure the velocity o
f surface elements is resolved. An estimate of the potential character
istics of the systems considered and the results of a modeling of the
velocity portrait mode of operation in an airborne radar system are gi
ven. The possibilities for the practical applications of the proposed
system are briefly discussed.
