The graphite first wall of the Reversed Field Pinch (RFP) experiment R
FX has been inspected after one year of operation, Are tracks and ther
mal erosion have been observed in particular around the two poloidal g
aps of the shell. The ionization lengths calculated from the experimen
tal edge profiles of electron temperature and density show that most o
f the carbon atoms released by thermal erosion, arcing and Radiation E
nhanced Sublimation (RES) are locally redeposited, whereas physical sp
uttering, including self sputtering, results as the most important sou
rce of carbon impurity.
