The addition of cationic surfactant causes significant drag reduction
in a fluid transport line of a district heating and cooling system. Th
e scale up data for a fluid transport system with a well known effecti
ve additive were obtained in this study, Also, a simplified calculatin
g method to predict the power consumption in the surfactant drag reduc
ing system was proposed. Many aspects of the practical problems which
are encountered in the application of surfactant drag reduction techno
logy were experimentally discussed and it was certified that the addit
ion of surfactants to the practical district heating and cooling syste
m caused no problem.
