The partition coefficients of catechol and three kinds of catecholamin
es were determined in aqueous two-phase systems containing polyethylen
e glycol (M(w)=7,500) ammonium sulfate at 25 degrees C. It was found t
hat the distribution coefficients of catechol and catecholamines incre
ase with increasing tie-line length and that an approximately linear r
elationship exists between lnK(4) (K-4=m(4)(TOP)/m(4)(BOT)) and tie-li
ne length. The partition coefficients of catecholamine were rather low
er than these of catechol. Further, the osmotic virial equation was us
ed to correlate the partition coefficients of catechol and three kinds
of catecholamines.
