Abstract
Fluoride glasses have been studied for the past 20 years and have foun d various applications in optics, sensors, infrared instrumentation, m edicine and telecommunications. Material requirements for these applic ations and for basic research influence the search for new glass-formi ng systems and the optimization of existing glasses. Fluoroindate and cadmium fluorochloride glasses appear promising for laser fibers and o ptical amplification. Mixed anion glasses offer some potential in nume rous fields, including optical transmission, ionic conductivity, non-l inear optical properties and basic research. They encompass new heavy halide, oxyfluoride and chalcohalide glasses.
