Abstract
Methods of detecting imminent failure in cables' could prevent the los s of valuable equipment, and more importantly, the possible loss of hu man life. The nondestructive test methods available are: careful visua l examination and measurement of the external cable diameter, X-rays, (induced) wave propagation, electromagnetic field (EM) and acoustic em ission (AE). This paper presents some preliminary results which show t he feasibility of detection of cable breakage using an infrared transd ucer developed at the Institute of Applied Mechanics.
