Abstract
This paper presents the results of a two years research programme, spo nsored by the European Union. The programme has examined the performac e of trickling filters filled with plastic media. New types of media c an provide also good nitrification results, therefore they can be used for the tertiary treatment of existing sewage treatment plants. The p rovision of a rotating mechanism has improved significantly the filter 's performance.
